Reports indicate that just a few weeks ago, in September, there were merely two illegal gambling dens operating within the town’s limits. However, by October, that number had rapidly ballooned as more gambling establishments opened their doors, often in direct violation of local laws. A resident from the Thein Taw Gyi Ward remarked on the ubiquity of these dens, expressing concern over the negative impact they have on families: “Gambling is causing arguments between husbands and wives. Though people are facing economic hardship, the authorities are not taking action against these [gambling den] issues.”
This lack of law enforcement starkly contrasts with the authorities’ focus on minor offenses, such as cracking down on motorcycles lacking mirrors or licenses. It raises the question: why are gambling activities, which have proven to exacerbate local crime and family dysfunction, seemingly overlooked by the very officials tasked with maintaining law and order?

“Even though there is no food available, people are still flocking to the gambling dens,” one resident lamented. The consequences of this behavior are manifesting in alarming ways, from an increase in thefts and robberies committed by gambling addicts trying to sustain their habits to an unsettling rise in street begging, particularly among young boys.
Women Seeking Escape, Men Stuck in Fear
The intertwining dynamics of poverty and conflict further complicate the situation. Continuous fighting has led many women to seek work in border areas, leaving behind strained families and communities.
