In the heart of Danville, Virginia, a significant transformation is underway as Caesars Virginia prepares to inaugurate its expansive casino. With a state-of-the-art 90,000-square-foot gaming floor, the project promises to become a key player in the region’s entertainment landscape. This development will not only revive a historic textile site but also inject new life into the local economy.

A Glimpse into Caesars Virginia

Set against the backdrop of the former Dan River textile campus, Caesars Virginia represents a $750 million investment jointly developed by Caesars Entertainment and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). As of December 2024, the casino will feature over 1,300 slot machines, 85 live dealer table games, 24 electronic tables, a dedicated World Series of Poker Room, and a Caesars Sportsbook, catering to both gaming aficionados and casual players alike.

Officials from Caesars and EBCI recently announced plans for the casino’s official opening, although a specific date is still pending. This permanent structure will replace the temporary gaming pavilion that has been in operation since May 2023, which currently houses 800 slots and 33 gaming tables.

The Resort Experience: More Than Just Gaming

While the casino will welcome its first guests as early as December, the complete resort and hotel experience will not be available until Spring 2025. The facility will feature a 320-room hotel, a lavish full-service spa, a resort pool, a 2,500-seat entertainment venue, and 50,000 square feet of meeting space. This comprehensive offering positions Caesars Virginia as more than just a gaming destination; it aims to attract tourists for conferences, entertainment, and leisure.

In a notable highlight, internationally acclaimed chef Gordon Ramsay will launch Ramsay’s Kitchen at the resort, offering guests the chance to indulge in signature dishes like his famous beef Wellington. In addition to Ramsay’s establishment, the resort will host an array of restaurants and upscale lounges, enhancing the culinary scene in Danville.

Economic Impact and Regional Growth

Caesars Virginia will become the third permanent casino in Virginia, following Rivers Casino Portsmouth and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol, which is set to open on November 14, 2024. This wave of new casinos represents an exciting shift for the state, as they aim to bolster tourism and create hundreds of jobs.

The casino occupies a site rich in history, previously dedicated to the textile industry that thrived for over a century. With the decline of manufacturing, the area sought new economic opportunities, and the arrival of Caesars Virginia is a significant step towards revitalization.

As of now, room reservations will be available starting April 1, 2025, with rates beginning at $499, not including the $35 resort fee and applicable taxes. For comparison, nearby accommodations such as the Hampton Inn offer more budget-friendly options at around $225, including breakfast.

A Calculated Gamble for Caesars Entertainment

The venture represents Caesars Entertainment’s largest commitment in regional gaming for several years. However, it comes with risks, as the company reported a 13% decline in EBITDA from regional operations in the third quarter of 2024. The primary reasons cited for this downturn include tough year-over-year comparisons and construction disruptions in New Orleans, where they are currently investing heavily.

Despite these challenges, Caesars executives expressed optimism about the future. The opening of the Danville casino and the renovation of the New Orleans location are expected to create a more stable and enriched experience for guests, enhancing the overall performance of Caesar’s regional properties.

Looking Ahead

As Caesars Virginia gears up for its inaugural phase, the company is counting on the momentum of the new casino to rebound from recent setbacks. CEO Tom Reeg has indicated that the existing tent structure has performed remarkably well, yet anticipates even greater potential with the expansion of gaming offerings once the permanent facility opens.

The continuing evolution of gambling laws and infrastructure is paving the way for a promising future in Virginia’s gaming landscape, with Caesars Virginia poised to play an essential role in this burgeoning market. As we approach 2025, the excitement is palpable, and the impacts of this project are expected to resonate throughout Danville and beyond for years to come.

With the promise of entertainment, hospitality, and economic stimulation, Caesars Virginia is set to become a significant attraction in the state, appealing to both local residents and visitors seeking excitement and luxury.
